The Wayworn Winger Trophy

Origins

The "Wayworn Winger" trophy was instigated in 1999 by then Regional Representative and all round crazy diamond Frank Rodrigues.

Wayworn Winger TrophyThe purpose was to provide a schedule of runs each year for members of North Wales Wings to attend and to provide an activity for those members who cannot or prefer not to attend Wing Dings and Treffens.

Members compete for the shield, which is engraved to bear the winner's name and year of winning.

In its first year, the trophy had no name and was christened by the first ever winners: "Billy, Cathy and Andrew Hall". The word "Wayworn" means "well knackered from travelling" and "Winger" translates to "idiot wot rides a GoldWing". Put the two together and you have someone who is well knackered from travelling around on their GoldWing. Bearing in mind how comfortable a Wing is, you must need to travel a lot of miles to get well knackered.

Rules

In 2003, the new rules of the competition became:

  • Any changes to these rules must be approved at a regional meeting by a vote.
  • Only North Wales Wings affiliated GWOCGB members are eligible to enter.
  • At the start of each year, twelve official Wayworn Winger destinations will be nominated for that year – only these destinations will score points for that year's trophy to be awarded in December.
  • One point per destination will be awarded to each rider and each pillion (including Wing Nuts) who completes a run to any of these destinations. A photograph of riders and bike at the location and a till receipt will usually be accepted as evidence.
  • Riders can nominate to do all twelve locations at their own convenience, or can ring round and get a number of Wing riders to attend. This will allow those who frequent the Wing Ding and Treffen circuits to compete also.
  • Points accumulated by rider and pillion partners cannot be pooled.
  • The winner(s) will be the person(s) who have the most points - in the event of two riders gaining equal points, the highest total mileage will win.
  • The winner will hold the trophy for one year and be responsible for its safekeeping and return. The winner will also receive a small shield to keep.
  • The emphasis is on having fun, so anyone caught not having fun will be disqualified.
