Report on April 2006 activities

Hi Folks,

The Winging season is now underway with several rides and events happening this month, but first a non-wing event unless you count the wings of a Manta Ray. – Colette managed her swim with the sharks and loved every moment of it – she actually stayed underwater with them for the full half hour allowed. Well done to Colette who managed to raise £358 for charity. (The Marine Biologist states that the sharks will recover, hopefully, in the next few months.)

This club report starts with our very first ‘Tuesday night Monthly meeting’ which was not as successful as we’d hoped. This was due to a very busy location but we will persevere and see how it goes.

Easter saw Mark, Liz and 2 wing-nuts riding in the courtesy car when their 1200 outfit blew the engine at Dover on their way to the Belgium Treffen. The outfit had to be recovered back to their home by the rescue services.

They decided to turn around and head home which meant that Laurie represented NWW at Belgium this year. Luckily the engine blow-up was a failed gasket and Mark has sorted it now, though at the time the noise, smoke and general noise made him think a new engine was the order of the day.

It did mean that Mark and Liz, on their 1500, decided to join Jan and I on a grand tour of North Wales (the first grand tour of the season for us which resulted in ‘numb bum syndrome’) but it was a great opportunity for me to show off a favourite route called Hidden Valley to some more riders, who really appreciated the scenic route.

The following weekend saw the mid-month social at Anne G’s house, with the usual Pot-Luck supper. The Social was hijacked by a Wing Ding committee meeting for a few minutes but it was an excellent evening for all, even poor Derek with his very painful leg cause by falling off his HGV trailer.

The following day, I went on a recce of some possible routes for the Bank Holiday weekend run. I found some gorgeous roads but I thought 5 farm gates, and 50 minutes to do about 13 miles was a bit much and not suitable for a run of Goldwingers!

Mark and Liz, in the meantime, decided to go to a Steam Rally at Sandbach where they get waved onto the rally route at the head of a line of Goldwings.

The Bank Holiday weekend saw Lancs & Lakes members camping at Bala. Following an earlier request made to North Wales Wings members for a guided tour of our patch, we were more than willing to oblige with grand tour of North Wales, through Dolgellau to our first tea stop at Aberdovey, where Ed managed to upset a local elderly lady, who when asked what was going on, was told by Ed that it was a round Britain tour to raise charity funds for deaf, blind, disabled Bats! This resulted in him getting clacked with a newspaper by said old lady.

The tour continued to Tywyn and Barmouth for lunch, then back to Bala via the scenic routes of Trawsfynydd and Llyn Celyn. Many thanks to Nigel and Joanna, Ed and Q, Stuart and Amy (who was frozen), and my pillion Jan, for their assistants in marshalling the route and trying to keep the unruly, noisy, troublesome L&L members under control. Though even when under such discipline, I think they actually enjoyed the run and many admitted they were on routes new to them

Our second Tuesday night meeting was a bit more of a success than the first, with more members present and a quieter location within the venue.

That’s all folks – keep the shiny bits up
