Report on December 2007 activities

Bore Da! Croeso at Esgyll Gogledd Cymru! - Good Day!  Welcome to North Wales Wings!

Hi there!

When I started to write this report in early December the Crocus bulbs were  pushing their heads through the soil as the weather has been so mild and it looked as if we to have either spring before Christmas or, they would all be killed off in the frost and we will miss a colourful show. Is everyone having this problem? It is now early January and freezing. They must be awfully confused!

Xmas Lunch: This took place on December 2nd after our monthly meeting. The December Wing Span submission date was early so I was unable to be completely up-to date with news. The Beaufort Hotel, which provides us with space for our meetings, does a good spread at a good price – no doubt negotiated by Jan & Dave T with their inside contacts – and we return the goodwill. Jan T had organised that we had a long, long table in the Regency Suite which meant that we were not split up. Jan T & Joanna embellished the table with a ‘centre piece’ of a huge sweetie bowl with favours surrounding it. They had used their skills to create little boxes – one for each- decorated with a silver Goldwing outline, stars and glitter, the whole tied with a silver ribbon. We all thought they were a lovely touch. New grandson Harry James made an appearance with Mum & Dad and there were lots of oohs and aahs as we ladies drooled over him. We had a free raffle and our Welsh Air Ambulance Charity Box made its appearance to accept loose change etc.

At our well attended December meeting we welcomed new Wingers Allan & Sue Fairclough  who braved the elements by riding in on their brand shiny new red 1800.They were able to get a flavour of what a busy social life is in store for them. We are looking forward to theirs and other member’s company and input over the coming months, in what promises to be a busy year.

December 15th:  This was our next winter event. Kath & Stu opened up their home for December’s get together where as usual, the food contributed was extensive, varied and good. Plenty for the voracious appetites of the men! Miss ‘Charity’ Box also put in an appearance and her appetite was fed by loose change lounging around in pockets. Her main course was provided by those who had to pay up for using swear words. Jan T said she did not think that f**t was a swear word but Dave T had to pay up anyway on her behalf. It was all in good fun and the Welsh Air Ambulance will benefit. Pete ‘Mr Runs’ eventually arrived as he got lost on the way from the Wirral and had to phone for directions even though he had maps and directions. (I have been instructed to include this). He arrived in time for the kick off and his special soup wasn’t any the worse for the journey. Seriously though, Kath must be thanked. She had decorated her house all Christmassy and provided lots of warmth and good cheer.

Out and about: Like the ‘Lone Ranger’, Pete ‘Mr Runs’ set out on his ‘lone’ last minute journey to Bedgellert on December 190th . He said that “it started out very nice, but by the time I was going over the top it started to RAIN then HAILSTONES and it was VERY COLD, but I still enjoyed it. I must be MAD.” Perhaps that is why everyone else hugged the bed and did not answer Pete’s e-mail and join in, as it was a bit breezy at this end, to say the least .Still Gold Wingers are a hardy lot and North Wales has its own charm in winter and with such dramatic scenery..…. ‘the mountains slumbering in the mist like sleeping giants waiting for the sun to wake them up and stride forth into spring’ (at least that is what I always think when I have left Môn [Anglesey] to drive towards Snowdonia) ….. it is certainly a land of contrasts. Later in the month, Dave T thought he would exercise some of the Christmas indulgences off by having a bike ride into the mountains. He took out his sporty BMW but disaster struck! It went on fire! He phoned the rescue man, and Dave S. who lived nearby. Dave came along and sat by the roadside with tea and sympathy. Dave T’s next run out was a more gentle one with Jan to the Ponderosa on the Horseshoe Pass, on the Wing of course!

Wirral Egg Run: Easter is early this year and we have had notice that the 28th Wirral Egg Run is taking place on March 16th. The organisers are keen to stress that it this is an “official event with full backing from all the authorities” and are looking for a good turn-out. www.wirraleggrun.co.uk

Dave T wants you to let him know if you are able to help in any way at all at this prestigious event, either in the preparations or on the weekend.
