Report on October 2007 activities

Bore Da! Croeso at Esgyll Gogledd Cymru! - Good Day!  Welcome to North Wales Wings!

Hi there!

First things first! Following our AGM this month (November) the positions are as follows:

  • Regional Rep - Dave Turvey
  • Minutes Secretary - Joanna Mackintosh
  • Treasurer - Janet Turvey
  • Quartermaster - Colette Clapham-Dickenson
  • Writer - Christine Prescott
  • Runs/Events Co-ordinator - Pete Rowe
  • Webmaster - Nigel Mackintosh

I am Christine and have been given the task of keeping you all abreast of our doings and adventures in the mountains and valleys of North Wales. I will be kind…. .! Allen & I ride our converted GL1500 Trike and have been members for 9 years. You will see a little bit of Welsh as an opening greeting. We are not Welsh by birth but Allen & I have lived in beautiful North Wales for 40 years. I hope that the Welsh speakers among you will –gently, very gently - correct any mistakes I may have made in my use of Welsh.

October was an eventful month. After the monthly meeting, a group of us were led by Pete ‘Mr Runs’ to see how he has landscaped Joy’s last resting place and we had a short time to reflect. After this the fun started as Pete led a group of us to see the Men of Mersey. For those who do not know of these amazing men – they are life sized sculptures of men in the buff, standing in the sands at Formby.

Well, we did ride up and down a few roads and in and out of a housing estate, dodging pot-holes and speed bumps – perhaps someone should start a campaign to Bring Back Better Roads. What do we pay taxes for?? The access road over the railway was closed so we Wings turned and swooped along the lanes in search of THE MEN. That was a lovely sight in itself and passers –by stopped to stare and go WOW!

By now Dave and Nigel were getting hungry, so the search changed to one of ‘search for the best but cheapest noshing house’. More ‘WOW’s from diners. The search for ‘THE MEN’ continues.

Xmas Lunch plans were underway in October with Jan T. anxious to get it all sorted before the arrival of their daughter’s Mr/Miss Bump. This will take place (the lunch, not the new arrival) as usual, at the Beaufort Hotel. If you happen to receive your Wingspan before the 2nd December meeting, lunch is planned for 2 pm after the meeting, when we can all let our hair down, eat, drink and have a laugh. It is also an opportunity for the ladies to get out of biking gear and ‘pretty up’. Men- likewise.

We look forward to welcoming members and potential members who are looking for some friendly people to ride and talk GoldWings with and don’t know where to start.

Welsh Air Ambulance Charity Day in Criccieth, recently supported by North Wales Wings (see October Wingspan) raised £400. (Our Charity Box is now taking its place at monthly meetings to house any loose change etc. throughout the year).

Lancs. and Lakes Wing Ding- was visited by Dave & Jan T, Nigel and Joanna who once again thoroughly enjoyed themselves at this Caravan based event which, this year, was L&L 25th Anniversary.

NWW

Their adventurous portrayal of Jimmy Saville complete with cigar, on the Fancy Dress Party Night won them 1st prize.

Early on the Sunday morning Dave and Jan had a phone call that things were happening back home on the baby front and they ‘Winged’ it back down the M6 for Jan to help in the delivery of their first grandchild Harry James who weighed in at 71b 12oz. Congratulations to the besotted pair and to proud parents Claire and James. (Dave is already planning when he can buy him his first GoldWing!!).

Reps /Open meeting in Rugby was attended recently by Dave T. Regional Rep.who has given a summary to members.

Our Mid Month Social was at the Beaufort for a change. We met for drinks and/ or food and chat. Dave & Jan T. and Jan’s mother; Allen & Christine; Dave & Jan S.; Derek and Barbara spent a relaxing evening in the Conservatory just chilling out.

New Wingers Robert and Stephanie - from the Isle of Man recently contacted Joanna Mackintosh for info on Trikes which they intend to base at their place near Carcassonne in the Midi Pyrenees. (Our web site certainly does attract from far and wide). Subsequently, he spoke to Allen, bought a Trike from Appleyards and sent some info to Allen on runs out in the Pyrenees which we were due to visit in September. Correspondence has been flowing back and to and they have just had a wonderful ‘1st ‘proper’ trip in the Isle of Skye returning via the Yorkshire Dales.

GWOCGB AGM –Dave T. represented NWW and had the sense to go in his car and keep dry.(Is that why he is Rep –he has sense?). Allen & Christine did not have the same sense and braved the driving rain and got very very wet! The meeting was a lively one to say the least.

The November Meeting saw us welcoming Paul and Jan Done and their Silver 1800 Gold Wing. Afterwards,6 bikes setoff (with riders & pillion) to show Steve C-P the wonders of Wales. More next month.
